What Happens Without SSL on Your SA Website

No SSL means Chrome and Firefox show a "Not Secure" warning to every visitor. Here is exactly what that costs you.

What Visitors See

Chrome displays a red "Not Secure" warning in the address bar. Studies show 85% of SA consumers will leave a site immediately when they see this warning. You lose the customer before they even read a word.

  • "Not Secure" in browser bar
  • Lower Google rankings
  • No online payment processing
  • Customer data unencrypted
  • POPIA risk if collecting personal data

SSL Questions for South African Businesses

Do I need an SSL certificate in South Africa?
Yes. Without SSL, Chrome and Firefox show a "Not Secure" warning to every visitor. Google also ranks HTTPS sites higher than HTTP sites in South African search results. If your site collects any personal data (contact forms, bookings, checkout), SSL is also a POPIA requirement.
How much does SSL cost in South Africa?
Free. Let's Encrypt SSL is included at no extra cost on all HostGridPro™ hosting plans. You do not pay for the certificate, installation, or renewal. It renews automatically every 90 days.
What is the difference between free SSL and paid SSL?
For most SA small businesses and e-commerce stores, Let's Encrypt (free) is identical in terms of encryption strength and browser trust. Paid SSL certificates (OV or EV) show your company name in the certificate details, which is mainly relevant for large financial institutions and enterprise sites. WooCommerce stores with PayFast run perfectly fine on free SSL.
My SSL expired — what do I do?
On HostGridPro™ hosting, SSL renews automatically before expiry. If you see an expired certificate warning, WhatsApp us immediately and we will force a renewal within minutes. This almost never happens because our system renews at 60 days remaining.
Can I get SSL for my domain if I bought it elsewhere?
Yes. Your domain just needs to be pointed to HostGridPro™ nameservers or A records. Once DNS propagates (15 min to a few hours), SSL will issue automatically on your hosting account.
